Fantasy is a rather young modern genre: the first half of the 20th century is considered to be the time of its inception and formation.
To date – thanks to the steady increase in popularity – fantasy has completely taken shape in an independent genre, with its bright features and features.
To genre features of fantasy
The atmosphere of magic or fairy tales, which is based on a mystery or riddle associated with extraordinary phenomena, heroes, battles or magic items.
Creatures or objects that do not exist in reality. Or unusual in appearance, or endowed with extraordinary abilities, for example, talking animals, animated trees, dragons, ghouls, unicorns, natural spirits and others like them.
An inexplicable force – either pervading the world, or concentrated in seemingly ordinary phenomena (for example, living and dead water), in people (sorcerers, diviners, witches) or in objects (magic staves, invisible hats and other artifacts). The existence of an unreal world. Either by itself (for example, another planet, a fictional world, alternative reality), or a fictional world in the real world (for example, the mythical Olympus, the bewitched kingdom, the country of Oz), or the invisible world that only the initiates feel (for example, the world of spirits and ghosts).
Knowledge that goes beyond the real, reasonable, logical or scientifically based (characterization of the magic system, national characteristics of the new race, pseudoscientific discoveries or inventions).
Sometimes all these features are present in explicit form, sometimes in hidden form. But even being hidden, they emphasize the nature of the fantasy genre and distinguish it from the general flow of entertaining and adventure literature.
The development of fantasy led to the emergence of the following subgenres:
Technofantasy – technomagy, worlds of the distant future. Key features: magic is adjacent to technology, magic is a science and is often interconnected with technological progress.
Fairytale fantasy is a fictional magical world with massive manifestations of magic at all possible levels of the universe, from magical powers in the hands of people to extraordinary creatures and natural phenomena. The emphasis in fairy-tale fantasy is on the secrets of peace and magic. An alternative story (alternative reality) is a story tied to the key question “What happened if? ..”. The “alternative” is based on real historical facts that are viewed from a different angle: what would happen if in the Middle Ages witches were not exterminated, etc. All the laws of the chosen era are respected.
Game reality: the plot is based on the characteristics of heroes, realities and events from a computer game.
Pseudo-mythical reality: events occur in a world based on Slavic, Scandinavian, Biblical or other mythology, with partially borrowed realities – deities, witchcraft, mythological creatures, social characteristics and social order.
Historical fantasy: the plot is based on the legend of a bright historical fact or hero (Crusades, witch hunts, adventures of King Arthur or Merlin). Historical realities or facts are rarely taken into account, but there is a historical setting and a bit of magic.Urban fantasy is the story of how Others live among us. In a real city, among real people, vampires, werewolves and others like them really exist. Either they interfere in the lives of people, or they live in their communities, not manifesting themselves in any way.
And at the heart of all the subgenres is an atmosphere of unreality, fantastic, fairy tale that pervades the world, moves heroes and, as a result, forms the plot, the idea, and the intrigue.
Of course, both of these classifications are approximate, and it is not necessary to follow their canons.
Yes, and synthesis, for example, quest fantasy and “dark” has not been canceled.
Think, invent and write with pleasure!
